The Southwest Civic Core Redevelopment Plan is an action plan for Houston’s most dense and diverse neighborhood in terms of nation of origin, languages spoken, educational attainment and more. It synthesizes and builds upon more than fifteen years of community planning and development efforts across the Greater Sharpstown and Gulfton areas.
The plan centers on the needs and lived experiences of the most vulnerable in the community. As the “Ellis Island” of Houston, Gulfton is the first landing place for dozens of niche communities of migrants and refugees. They are drawn to the area first by immediate contact with their national consular offices located in southwest Houston, who work in coordination with strong non-governmental transitional support organizations such as BakerRipley and the YMCA International Services.
