On Monday, February 26th the Southwest Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ 20 and its partners hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate upcoming construction of the Sharpstown Trail. Once complete, a 1.8 mile trail segment will extend from Sands Point Drive to Beechnut Street via an easement made available by agreement between CenterPoint and the City of Houston. The trail is the first of three phases that will ultimately connect the Sharpstown community to Brays Bayou and Houston’s extensive Bayou Greenway network.

The Sharpstown Trail will be the result of multiple organizations working together for the benefit of local businesses and residents. The $3.1 million segment of the trail is funded by Southwest Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ 20 and Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones’ Places 4 People Initiative. The Houston Parks Board will serve as project manager during development of the trail and the Southwest Management District will maintain the trail upon its completion in the fall of 2024.

The Sharpstown Trail is part of a larger vision created by students from the University of Houston’s Community Design Resource Center in coordination with the Sharpstown Civic Association.

“The Sharpstown Trail adds one more element to the increasingly high quality of life enjoyed here, noted Welcome Wilson Jr, Chair of the Southwest Redevelopment Authority/TIRZ 20.

Attendees at the event included TIRZ 20 Board Chair Welcome Wilson Jr., Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, U.S. Representative Al Green, Texas State Representative Gene Wu, Houston Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum, and City Councilmembers Edward Pollard, Sallie Alcorn, Willie Davis and Julian Ramirez. Also in attendance were Southwest Management District Chair Kenneth Li, Houston Parks Board President Beth White and others.
